Museums of Port Isabel Oral HistoryThe Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2017.

On October 26 at 7 p.m., George and Virginia Gause will present this month’s topic, “Day of the Dead in Oaxaca”, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum (308 E. Queen Isabella Blvd.). Preceding the presentation will be a walking tour of the historic Port Isabel Cemetery at 6 p.m. The public is invited.

George and Virginia met in 1972 at Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, while they were pursuing their Master in Library Science (MLS) degrees. George was born in New York and Virginia was born in Alabama. After graduation in 1973 they came to the Valley to work as librarians at the Pan American University now known as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

The Gauses have enjoyed collecting Mexican folk art for over 40 years. Attracted by both color and creativity they have traveled and visited with folk artists while enjoying excursions to Mexico City and the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Yucatan, Chiapas, Guerrero, Michoacán, Jalisco and others. Their favorite area is Oaxaca which they have visited over forty times.

It was in Oaxaca that they learned the most about the Day of the Dead. Their presentation will consist of slides on the subject of Day of the Dead that they took during various trips to Mexico as well as some three-dimensional objects from their collection.

Before his retirement in 2011, George Gause served as Special Collections Librarian with emphasis on local Valley history and Hispanic genealogy. Virginia retired as Media and Marketing Librarian in 2015. For the past eleven years she has been moderator of ArtsRGV.com, an electronic calendar highlighting cultural events in the Valley.

Please join us for an entertaining evening with George & Virginia Gause about the “Day of the Dead in Oaxaca”. All locals and visitors are welcomed to attend this free presentation. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
