Museums of Port Isabel Announces New Exhibit “MEXICO THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS CHILDREN”

Exhibit will be on display from June 2 – August 15, 2010

The Museums of Port Isabel proudly present (MEXICO VISTO POR SUS NIÑO’S) “Mexico Through the Eyes of its Children”. Mayor Joe E. Vega and City Manager Edward Meza will welcome the new Consulate members to the City of Port Isabel and officially inaugurate the opening of the photo exhibit during a reception on Wednesday June 2, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the Treasures of the Gulf Museum. This wonderful exhibit will be on display from June 2, ~ August 15, 2010. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports the cause by allowing this exhibit to travel to different US cities through the Consulate de México and their partners.

The images were taken from a very peculiar source with a very peculiar point of view. The participants are children between the ages of 8 and 17, from Michoacan, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla, and Mexico. They used digital cameras to photograph their families, friends and even the local festivities.

The children attended the Fund for the Children of Mexico’s Community Centers. This organization has promoted over 33 years of development in children and teenagers of poverty conditions. The Fund supports more than 45,000 kids in 206 rural communities in Mexico.

For a week the children had the opportunity to become photographers and document their own reality. They attended workshops and were encouraged to take care of their digital cameras. The children learned how to take pictures, and along the way, they discovered who they truly are. This exhibition is the result of those emotions and discoveries of a world never seen. We encourage all visitors and locals to tour the museums and view this temporary exhibit.

The Port Isabel Lighthouse will be open on Memorial Day! Visit and view the beautiful and charming Port Isabel skyline and the sparkling Laguna Madre Bay from the top of the Lighthouse over 80 feet high!

As a special thanks to our Military, admission is free to the Lighthouse, the Treasures of the Gulf Museum and the Port Isabel Historical Museum ALL year long! Just bring id. Law Enforcement, EMS and Fire Fighters also qualify. Please visit the Local Hero Military Service display on the second floor of the Port Isabel Historical Museum.

THE TURTLE LADY LEGACY (5/27 @ 6 p.m.)

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2010 on Thursday, May 27, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 E. Railroad Ave. at 6:00 p.m. Mary Ann Tous, niece of famed Ila Fox Loetcher aka “The Turtle Lady”, who began her work on sea turtle conservation in 1965 and was a pioneer in her field by playing a vital role in protecting the Kemp Ridley Sea Turtles, will give a presentation on the history of the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles and the efforts that go towards their protection. Ila was a major inspiration to her niece, Mary, and in 2005, Mary Ann Tous founded a non profit organization called “The Turtle Lady Legacy”. Their goals are to educate and continue the safety and conservation of majestic sea turtles by following in Ila Fox Loetscher’s footsteps. Recent events causing a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are threatening these marine animals and their nesting habitats.

All locals and visitors are welcomed to attend this free presentation. Drinks and Refreshments will be served.

“The History of the Freemasons” presented by Warren Winger, Masonic Lodge Number 33, Friday, April 30th.

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2010 on Friday, April 30, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 E. Railroad Ave. at 6:00 p.m. Warren Winger, of the Masonic Lodge Number 33 will present “The History of the Freemasons”. Mr. Winger has been a Mason for forty-one years and is credited as being one of the founding members for reviving Point Isabel Lodge 33 in December 2007. Lodge 33 was originally petitioned and granted in 1847, but never established until 2007. His presentation will grant the public insight into the Freemasons and their influential impact on Texas history.

An exhibition on the Freemasons will be on display in the Historic Champion Building till the end of the year.

Both Treasures of the Gulf Museum and the Port Isabel Historical Museum will be open for guests to tour during the evening. Drinks and Refreshments will be served. All locals and visitors are welcomed to attend. No admission fee. Open to the public.
