Telling Our Stories~ How to Prepare for a Hurricane with Barry Goldsmith 6/23 6:30p FREE

How to Prepare for a Hurricane
with Barry Goldsmith

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present the “Telling Our Stories” 2011 series on Thursday, June 23, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 East Railroad Ave. at 6:30pm.  This month’s topic will be “How to Prepare for a Hurricane”.

Mr. Barry Goldsmith is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville, serving the Rio Grande Valley and all of Deep South Texas. Barry recently celebrated his 25th anniversary with the NWS.

Barry began his career in 1986 as a student trainee at NWS National Headquarters in Washington, DC, developing statistical equations on numerical models to assist the forecast process. Upon graduation from the Pennsylvania State University in 1988, he began full time work as a Verification Specialist, also at National Headquarters. In 1993, he transferred to the Baltimore/Washington DC Field office as a general forecaster, dealing with nearly every type of weather imaginable, including blizzards, floods, heat waves, destructive tornadoes and hurricanes.

In 1998, Barry became a senior meteorologist at the Weather Forecast Office in Tampa Bay, Florida, where he learned about hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. In late 2007, Barry was promoted to the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the NWS office in Brownsville, where he now resides with his wife.

As Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Barry is responsible for building relationships with local government officials, local and regional media and community leaders across the Rio Grande Valley to mitigate the impact of hazardous weather by saving and protecting life, limiting property damage and reducing costs to the local economy. He’s also a “coach” within the office, ensuring that his staff communicates hazardous weather information effectively to help people stay safe when the weather gets rough.

Barry has extensive knowledge and experience communicating hurricane and other weather hazards. He has spoken or taught at dozens of meetings, workshops and conferences from Florida to Texas in the past decade. He was the primary author of descriptive impact information used by NWS offices during landfalling hurricanes. The terms “certain death”, used prior to Ike in 2008 and “water storage will be incredible by modern standards” used prior to Katrina in 2005, were originally crafted by Mr. Goldsmith at the turn of the century.

Please join us as we learn about “How to Prepare for a Hurricane”. All locals and visitors are welcome to attend this free presentation. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
