The Museums of Port Isabel announces “SUMMER CAMP 2011”. The Museums of Port Isabel is conducting a Summer Camp complete with a wide variety of activities sure to keep the campers interested and in the process they will also learn something about the history of the Laguna Madre area.

The Museums’ SUMMER CAMP program is looking for volunteers, sponsors and participants, June 22 – August 13 from 9am-2pm (Wednesday thru Saturday). We are seeking for campers from 1st – 5th grade. Cost: $50 for each camper per month or $75 for both months and includes: T-Shirt, Art Crafts, Videos, Walking Tours, Lunch and Games.

Weekly Schedule:
Wednesday – All About Pirate
Thursday – Seashells & Butterflies
Friday & Saturday – Birds of the Gulf, Rio Grande Valley & Endangered Birds

* Late pick up fee if campers are picked up after 2:00 p.m., for each hour.

“The Whyless (Wireless Station) Building”

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present “Telling Our Stories” the 2011 series on Thursday May 26, inside the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 E. Railroad Ave. at 6:30 p.m.  This month’s topic will be “The Whyless Building” by guest speaker Mr. Rudy Garcia.

In 1916, Point Isabel Wireless Station was built on 20 acres with two 330 foot triangular steel towers spaced 1250 feet apart. The Point Isabel site was one of three wireless stations strategically placed by the U.S. Navy to cover the whole of North America. The First New York Cavalry was part of a contingent to set-up the wireless station as seen by the tents and horse-drawn wagons next to the towers.  Locals referred the area as the “Whyless” station.

The “Whyless” building, built shortly after 1919 served as a U.S. Military Barracks during WWI. Soon after, it was used as a Life Saving Refuge for victims of the devastating 1933 unnamed hurricane.

Having grown up in Port Isabel Texas as a child, Mr. Garcia now lives in Laguna Vista Texas where he has resided for the past 31 years.

Mr. Garcia attended Pan American University from 1973 – 1976, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelors degree of Science and Psychology with a minor in Sociology and English.

In 1988, Mr. Garcia received a Masters Degree in Education Counseling and Guidance from Pan American University of Brownsville.

“I realized education is my vocation after I left teaching to work for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services as a Child Protective Service Case Worker for three years” said Mr. Garcia.

In total, Mr. Rudy Garcia has devoted 27 years of service working for the Point Isabel ISD.

Please join us as we learn about some of Port Isabel’s forgotten history. All locals and visitors are welcome to attend this free presentation. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be available.

“Telling Our Stories” is a free presentation open to the public which is held by the Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation. These presentations are set on the final Thursday of the month from January through September at 6:30 pm. “Climate Change”

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Consulate de Mexico are proud to present “Climate Change”, featuring renowned Mexican artist Javier de la Garza on May 4, 2011 @ 6:30pm in the Treasures of the Gulf Museum located at 317 E. Railroad Ave., Port Isabel, TX. This temporary exhibit will be on display from May 4, 2011 through June 4, 2011.

Javier de la Garza is one of the most premier artists of the current plastic arts or `Neo-Mexicanism’, which has arisen in Mexico in the middle of the Eighties. This new artistic manifestation has great influence of the symbolism that represents the Mexican nationalism of that time.

In these new plastic arts, artist Javier de la Garza, offers an exhibition of 13 oil paintings on fabric, through which he invites us to view the reflection about the necessity of incorporating values that can influence climatic changes, evoking animal images which are in danger of extinction.

Born in Tampico, in the state of Tamaulipas Mexico; Javier de la Garza began his studies of Architecture in the University of Nuevo Leon. Later he studied engraving in the National School of Plastic Arts in Mexico before studying at ‘Studio 17′ with S.W. Hayter, in Paris.

As a teacher, Javier de la Garza counts on multiple individual exhibitions to showcase his work which have collectively been displayed in Mexico, New York, Phoenix, Houston, Paris, Brazil and Jamaica.

Join us for this free open house reception hosted by the Museums of Port Isabel and the Consulate de Mexico on May 4^th at 6:30 pm. The Museums of Port Isabel and the Consulate de Mexico would like to invite all locals and art enthusiast to view this temporary exhibit.
