Canceled> Telling Our Stories~ The Turtle Lady Legacy with Mary Ann Tous 8/25 6:30p FREE admission

CANCELED> The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2011 on Thursday, August 25, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 East Railroad Avenue at 6:30pm. This month’s topic will be on “The Turtle Lady Legacy”.

Mary Ann Tous, niece of famed Ila Fox Loetcher aka “The Turtle Lady”, who began her work on sea turtle conservation in 1965 and was a pioneer in her field by playing a vital role in protecting the Kemp Ridley Sea Turtles, will give a presentation on the history of the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles and the efforts that go towards their protection. Illa was a major inspiration on her niece Mary and in 2005, Mary Ann Tous founded a non profit organization called “The Turtle Lady legacy”. Their goals are to educate and continue the safety and conservation of majestic sea turtles by following in Illa Fox Loetscher’s footsteps.  Recent events causing a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are threatening these marine animals and their nesting habitats.

Please join us as we learn about “The Turtle Lady Legacy”. All locals and visitors are welcomed to attend this free presentation. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

‘Telling Our Stories” is an educational program aimed to preserving the heritage of the City of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre area. Our goals are to preserve and educate our local and natural history through presentations and exhibits. The program is co-sponsored by the Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Museum Foundation. “Telling Our Stories” is presented on the last Thursday of each month from January through September at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum. Admission is free.

Museums to host Opening Reception for Artist Virginia Eggert 8/11 7p

The Museums of Port Isabel is hosting an exhibit of local art by Port Isabel artist Virginia R. Eggert from Friday, July 1 thru Monday, September 5, 2011.  An opening reception will take place in the Treasures of the Gulf Museum on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 7 pm. The public is invited to attend.  Refreshments will be served.

Using an impressionistic style, Virginia paints with bright acrylics to capture and interpret situations and scenes from Port Isabel and the surrounding area.  All the paintings in this exhibit are done on gallery wrap canvas – the edges of the canvas are part of the painting and thus the artwork doesn’t need a frame.

Virginia R. Eggert’s subject matter includes landscapes and seascapes with boats, buildings, birds, palm trees, water views and people.  She enjoys paintings what she sees – especially the early morning and late afternoon colors and shadows on the environment.

Virginia has been involved with art all her life.  After graduating from high school, she earned a Bachelors degree in Visual Art from the University of Montana in Missoula.  She also earned a Masters degree in Art Education and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson and took art classes at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and Juneau.

Virginia R. Eggert moved to Port Isabel in 2001, and was intrigued by the unique and colorful scenery of this area.  She joined the Laguna Madre Art League and was active as an officer for a number of years.  Now, she spends her time painting commissions and doing artwork for local shows such as the Laguna Madre Art League Annual Show and the Beachcombers Fine Arts Show.  Her work is in art collections worldwide.

She lives in Port Isabel and has a gallery-studio in her home.  Her artwork is on display and for sale in Port Isabel at the Purple Parrot Art Gallery, 405 East Maxan and at the Fly Shop 318 Queen Isabella.  To arrange a studio visit, e-mail her at virginakeylargo@aol.com or call 956-943-1153.  Her website is www.virginiaeggert.com.

Please join us on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 7 p.m. to celebrate Virginia Eggert’s artistic interpretation of the Laguna Madre area during the opening reception. No admission charge.
