Lighthouse Market Day 10/13 9-4p ~ Live Music & MORE!

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, the City of Port Isabel and the Port Isabel Museums will be hosting their annual Lighthouse Market Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Lighthouse grounds.

Vendors on the Lighthouse Square will be offering a variety of food, antiques, arts & crafts, art and more. For vendor information, click here.

Special admission prices to museums and lighthouse! The Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will have a special admission price of $1.00 for each site. The Lighthouse will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. also with a special admission price of $1.00. Come join in the fun, enjoy historic Port Isabel during Lighthouse Market Day.

The Lighthouse Market Day is an extension of the Museums of Port Isabel’s mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the art, history, and culture of the Laguna Madre area through preservation, educational programs, tours, exhibits, and workshops. Held annually on the second Saturday of October, Lighthouse Market Day celebrates our historic roots, our community and the beauty of the Port Isabel Lighthouse.

Live music by MEZA! Originally started as a side project for the Woodsboro High School Band in 2008, MEZA is now a versatile trio playing a variety of music such as rock, oldies and even country music. David Meza Jr. is the lead guitar and vocals. Edward Meza plays bass and David Meza, Sr. (Dad) on drums. MEZA has played many venues in the Corpus Christi area, such as The House of Rock and Disc-Go-Round, and local clubs in Woodsboro. Additionally, MEZA has won second place in the Battle of The Bands in Corpus Christi in 2009. They also have played for local benefits such as Back to School Bash, Christmas on the Square and local Church Festivals.

Telling Our Stories~ True Life Stories from the Mexican Revolution 9/27 6:30p

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2012 on Thursday, September 27th, at the Treasures of theGulfMuseum,317 East Railroad Avenue at 6:30pm. This month’s topic will be on “True Life Stories from the Mexican Revolution”.

Gloria Bates was born inBeloit,Wisconsinwhere she spent her formative years growing up in the mid-west of the 1930s.  During her college years at theUniversityofWisconsin, Gloria and friends played in a band called the “Stardusters” they formed in high school and set about entertaining at various venues, Gloria on her trusty Gibson.  In the early 1960s, Gloria and husband Bob and sons Rod and Rex made a trip to southTexas.  In the late 1960s a teaching position in the migrant program in Mercedes made the move permanent and eventually the family moved to Bayside and then to Port Isabel where the family operated Seagull Imports.

Always the entertainer, Gloria continued to take every opportunity to sing and play and then incorporated both talents to play writing.  Upon retiring in November of 2010, Gloria turned her creative talents towards the canvas and has painted a variety of subjects including Day of the Dead, local scenes of cultural interest, and is involved in commission work.  Several galleries inSouth Texassuccessfully feature Gloria’s work.

Please join us as we learn about “True Life Stories from the Mexican Revolution”. All locals and visitors are welcomed to attend this free presentation. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

‘Telling Our Stories” is an educational program aimed to preserving the heritage of the City ofPort Isabeland the Laguna Madre area. Our goals are to preserve and educate our local and natural history through presentations and exhibits. The program is co-sponsored by the Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Museum Foundation. “Telling Our Stories” is presented on the last Thursday of each month from January through September at the Treasures of theGulfMuseum. Admission is free.
