Telling Our Stories~ Dr. MANUEL MEDRANO 10/23 7p (Special Date)

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present a special “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2013 on WEDNESDAY, October 23th, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 East Railroad Avenue at 7pm. This month’s topic will be presented by Dr. Manuel Medrano. 

Manuel F. Medrano, a Brownsville native, is a graduate of Texas A & I University and the University of Houston .  He has taught history at Texas A & I University, the University of Houston, Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas at Brownsville, specializing in Mexican American heritage and U.S. history.  He has six published books including three histo-cultural  bilingual children’s poetry books about South Texas including In Body and Mind/En cuerpo y mente, Imagenes/Images of the South Texas Border and In the Shadow of My Soul/En la sombra de mi alma.  He has co-written a book entitled Charro Days in Brownsville and a history book entitled Medieval Culture and the Mexican American Borderlands.  His last book, Americo Paredes, In His Own Words, received a finalist award at the International Latino Book Awards in New York City.  In collaboration with the UTB/TSC Media Services, He has produced twenty six documentaries about the Rio Grande Valley, its people and its culture. One, el dia de los muertos, you will be seeing in a few minutes.  He is currently a member of the Humanities Texas  Board and on its Distinguished Speaker’s Bureau.

The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2013 on Thursday, October 24th, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, 317 East Railroad Avenue at 7pm. This month’s topic will be presented by David Bowles.

David Bowles resides in the Río Grande Valley of south Texas with his wife and children. Bowles launched his D’ANGELO CHRONICLES in 2009. In April of 2011, Absey & Co. published THE SEED: STORIES FROM THE RIVER’S EDGE. In 2012, Bowles teamed up with painter Noé Vela to create MEXICAN BESTIARY. In August 2013, Lamar University Press released FLOWER, SONG, DANCE: AZTEC AND MAYAN POETRY, a collection of Mesoamerican verse translated by Bowles. He has served as editor for the ALONG THE RIVER anthology series, DONNA HOOKS FLETCHER: LIFE AND WRITINGS, the magazine FLASHQUAKE, and LA NORIA Literary Journal. His book review column TOP SHELF appears each Thursday in THE MONITOR, a regional newspaper.
