Treasures of the Gulf Museum
The Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation are proud to present its “Telling Our Stories” Series of 2015 on Thursday, May 28, at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum at 7pm. (317 E. Railroad Ave.)
TOPIC: US Mexican War & Fort Polk. Early events of local interest. Presented by Jim Mills.
Mr. James Mills has taught history at the University of Texas /Texas Southmost College, for over 20 years. With a strong interest in local history, Mr. Mills has published multiple articles, including published works in the Journal of South Texas and the Mexican War Journal. He has also published a book of oral history interviews concerning the old border post of Fort Brown, which received the prestigious Mary Faye Barnes Award from Baylor University. Mr. Mills is also the recipient of the Chancellor’s Council Outstanding Teaching Award, with special recognition from the Governor’s office (Rick Perry), as well as the Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award from UT –Austin. Mr. Mills currently serves as Vice President of the Brownsville Historical Association.
“Telling Our Stories” is an educational program aimed to preserving the heritage of the City of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre area. Our goals are to preserve and educate our local and natural history through presentations and exhibits. The program is co-sponsored by the Museums of Port Isabel and the Laguna Museum Foundation. “Telling Our Stories” is presented on the fourth (4Th) Thursday of each month from January through September at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum. Admission is FREE.
